about

Adjoining is a piece which responds to an older musical language: a language that intimates tonal hierarchies which create strong directionality. I was interested in manipulating this basically tonal framework in such a way that the harmonies evoke a kind of ambiguity as much as directionality by resolving in various ways. To me this type of fluid tonality is a highly expressive device, one that corresponds to the long chromatic lines which form the horizontal and melodic material.

The piece begins with a phrase structure that feels familiar—materials that are laid out in a melodic and contrapuntal fashion. As these materials develop, they undergo various transformations; the musical intensity increases. But the end of the piece does not do as expected; the violin’s expressive melodic line travels higher and higher upward in register until it reaches its final pitches: high, searching, spare. --Hannah Lash
